Top tips for a safe spooky, sparkly season

Halloween, Sparklers & Fireworks: stay safe

Enjoy the spooky season and sparkling skies while keeping everyone safe and well. In a life-threatening emergency call 999. For urgent advice that’s not life-threatening, use NHS 111 online or call 111.

Important: Quick safety checklist

  • Use LED/battery candles instead of real flames.
  • Choose flame-resistant costumes.
  • Keep children with a responsible adult after dark.
  • Prefer organised firework displays where possible.

👻 Halloween safety

  • Add reflective strips or take a torch / glow sticks when out after dark.
  • Choose flame-resistant costumes and avoid trailing fabrics.
  • Use battery candles or LEDs for pumpkins and decorations.
  • Children should be accompanied by a responsible adult when trick-or-treating.
  • Check sweets for choking hazards before young children eat them.

What to do if someone is choking

✨ Sparklers

  • Always wear gloves when holding sparklers.
  • Keep sparklers away from clothes, hair and others.
  • Do not give sparklers to children under 5.
  • Place finished sparklers into a bucket of cold water or sand.

  • Attend organised displays where possible.
  • Do not use fireworks if you have been drinking alcohol.
  • Light one firework at a time and stand well back.
  • Never return to a firework that hasn’t gone off.
  • Keep a safe distance from bonfires and supervise children closely.
  • Never burn aerosols, batteries, tyres or foam-filled furniture.
